First let’s take a look at the free instrumentals that you can find on Youtube.

On Youtube when you look for instrumental you must have noticed that many producers (including myself) write [FREE] in the title of their video.

This indicates that you can download the instrumental for free from the producer’s site to use it, however it is often confusing. Indeed what you will download will be a version of the beat that usually is :

A Low-quality MP3 – with the producer’s audio tags

So why is it marked [FREE] in the title of the video if you only get a version that is barely usable for recording?

In fact, this version of the instrumental is only intended for  recording non-commercial projects and therefore mainly demos!

In short :

• A free beat does not allow the recording of quality song because of the format and audio tags
• A free beat does not allow you to stream (Spotify, Deezer, or even Youtube if your music is monetized) and sell your music
• A free beat will mainly serve you to make a demo to test your idea before buying the instrumental

Finally, it is better not to try to slip through the cracks by marketing a song recorded on a free beat because:

The producer will probably be made aware of it (The detection of copyright by the Youtube Content ID system will immediately signal it)

The producer will be able to seek damages in court (the penalties incurred range from $5000 to $500,000 so …..  it can make an instrumental real expensive 😅)

What are the advantages of purchasing a lease for an instrument online ?

How does it work ?

By purchasing an instrument online, you are purchasing a lease for the audio file and broadcasting rights. In return for this payment, the producer guarantees to send you the instrumental in the desired audio quality as well as a contract guaranteeing your rights! 📝

This lease is called a license.

There are 2 types of licenses:

1. Non-exclusive licenses

2. Exclusive licenses

The big difference between the two is that a non-exclusive license can be sold to many different artists while an exclusive license can only be sold to a single artist (however the latter always represents a larger financial investment).

Which license is best?

Each producer offers different licenses. Personally,  I offer 4 licenses:

Basic – MP3/WAV

Premium – MP3/WAV plus Trackouts

Unlimited – MP3/WAV plus Trackouts with no usage restrictions

Exclusive

Licenses increase in price, so the more expensive the license, the better broadcast rights and better audio quality 🎧

To be completely honest, the vast majority of people who buy instrumentals online choose the cheapest licenses (often MP3). Unfortunately this license only provides limited audio quality and fairly limited broadcasting rights, but that must be enough for them.

I do not offer MP3’s by themselves for this reason.

The quality of audio files is an essential criterion to take into account in music so …. if you are serious about your career …. stop using MP3s for your songs.

The Premium WAV and Unlimited Track – out licenses both guarantee you uncompressed and much richer WAV audio formats, which are the audio formats used in the studio! 🔊

It is with quality beats that you will be able to make quality songs.

If I bought a basic license (Non-Exclusive MP3) is it possible to upgrade to a higher license afterwards?

On my site: Yes. I have created a page specifically dedicated to these requests ! When you start, you don’t necessarily have the means to invest immediately in a high-end license. You can start by purchasing a classic license and then upgrade to the next version

You will only pay the price difference between the two licenses!

On the other hand be careful, many producers do not offer this option when selling instrumentals online so ….  you could find yourself forced to repay your entire license.

What happens if I bought a non-exclusive license and then someone buys an exclusive license for the same instrument?

Do not panic ! When you buy a non-exclusive license, even if the exclusivity is subsequently sold, your rights are guaranteed by a contract. So you will have no worries and you will be able to keep your song! 🎤

Is it safe to buy beats online?

The vast majority of producer go through instrumental sales platforms, the three most famous are:

Beatstars

Airbit  (which I personally use)

Soundee ( I use this one as well)

These platforms are used by a lot of artists, so they are quite secure. I have accounts on more than one platform because it is good for producers that do collaborations with other artists.

Regarding the buying process, everything goes like this:

1. You select on the store the instrument and the license that suits you
2. You will then be redirected to a secure payment page
3. Once payment has been made you will be redirected to a direct download page for your instrument and your contract (an email will also be sent to you with these links)
